The problem
Built in 1956, the Sarra housing estate is located close to Old Lyon, a tourist attraction listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The residents of this estate suffered from a complex of isolation worsened by standardised architecture.
Action / result
Co-designed with the inhabitants, the buildings were decorated with monumental architectural trompe-l’œil paintings. Based on the Renaissance style of Old Lyon, the aesthetic response was aimed at linking this estate with its territorial identity and history, in conformity with the specifications of the Architectes des Bâtiments de France (Architects of French Historic Buildings).
The vacancy rate is now manageable and turnover optimised. The area has been reinvigorated with the extension of a bus route up to the estate and the preservation of a class in the neighbouring school.
This operation was covered by the local, national and international media, giving a powerful and positive image, fuelling the pride of the inhabitants, and improving the image of the contracting owner and the district.
