“The banks of the Loire” The monumental mural design of Sanitas TOURS

Context

Tour(s) Habitat wanted to combine the external thermal insulation of the buildings of the Sanitas district with monumental mural designs produced by CitéCréation. This project was carried out in consultation with the residents and neighbouring population.

The frescos of the banks of the Loire

Listen to the tenants, take into account their wishes, in brief make them actors in their own neighbourhood: that’s what I most have in mind when thinking about this magnificent collective work.

The point of departure

In the framework of a thermal refurbishment project in which the solutions of insulation are quite standardised and aesthetically bleak, how could the risk of regimenting an estate of character appreciated by its residents be avoided?
An elegant and discrete mid-rise estate, the neighbourhood of Sanitas is situated in Tours city centre.
It is composed of buildings of good quality and the inhabitants are concerned about not spoiling the aesthetic appearance of the buildings by uniform thermal insulation.

Action / result

Thanks to the organisation of consultation and joint creation with the tenants, the project of a circuit of frescos on the theme of the banks of the Loire emerged. Being the centre of admiration of the inhabitants of Tours has enabled all the actors of the project to show that social housing can be a source of pride and beauty.
This lasting transformation of the facades has enabled the Sanitas neighbourhood to dialogue elegantly with its heritage and environment while staying in contact with the city centre.
