Located near the city’s large zoological park stands one of the largest high-rise apartment blocks in Berlin, the symbol of the industrial architecture of the former German Democratic Republic.
In the framework of refurbishing this block, sadly nicknamed the “Snake” by the district’s inhabitants, the housing cooperative Solidarität wanted to change the building’s too frequently stigmatised image. The effect of an ultra-wide high-rise was called into question.
A spectacular change of image was achieved with an improvement in rental management performance and the upgrading of the building’s aesthetic appeal. It is now a well-known tourist attraction in the district of Lichtenberg and the pride of its inhabitants.
The work attracted strong media attention and is the largest inhabited mural with 22,000 m² of painted facades. This ambitious project is
mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records.
