“Silhouettes” Wall design BERLIN

Context

The industrial architecture of “Plattenbau” in Marzahn, a district in East Berlin, has had a strong impact on the landscape of the neighbourhoods, creating a desolate uniformity.

Thermal refurbishment in silhouettes

Children often play here but the surrounding buildings make it look like a prison courtyard. Thanks to the decor it’s become fun and lively with shadow and light.

The point of departure

How could the uniformity of the facades be reduced and the monotony of the architecture broken?

Action / result

Thanks to the aesthetic concept of “tree shadows projected onto the facades”, it was possible to solve several of the problems caused by the architecture of these buildings by:

  • ending the isolation of the block by creating a singularity noticed by everyone.
  • breaking the linearity of the facades.
  • creating a daily dynamism, both permanent and playful (animals are hidden in the trees to catch the
gaze of parents and encourage the children to play).
