The Lumière Mural LYON

Context

Picture a faded, blind wall at the heart of the Gerland district in Lyon, a major economic centre with some 2,300 enterprises employing about 35,000 people of which 5,000 work in high-tech sectors. The Gerland district is above all a hub for world leaders in the life sciences sector, making it a world-class cluster specialised in health: Lyonbiopôle. This dynamism is highlighted by the presence on the scientific boulevard of some of the biggest biotech companies such as Sanofi Pasteur, Mérial, Genzyme Polyclonals, Episkin (L’Oréal) and Aguettant.

35,000 jobs including 5,000 in high-tech sectors.

Lumière Fresco: a world first!

When it was created the Lumière mural at the entrance to Gerland, located just after the vaults of Jean Macé, anticipated what the district was to become: the city of the future. That’s the genius of Citécréation.

The point of departure

Mural painting has been practiced throughout human history in every great civilisations. The oldest mural works known to date are those in the Chauvet Cave in Ardèche, painted 33,000 years ago. As direct descendants of these first “muralists”, we aim to pursue and transmit this universal discipline, by making our contribution to innovation in homage to our mural painting ancestors.
Following the pleasure of research for the Lumière Mural, we designed and produced this pictural work with the aid of the famous illustrator François Schuiten, the strip cartoonist. This work takes is viewers to the brink of the third millennium, thanks to a futuristic vision of Lyon, portrayed by nocturnal stage setting accentuated by dynamic lighting.

Action / result

Under the aegis of the contracting owner, the Public Lighting Service of the City of Lyon, the workshops ECA and Vialis used a daytime image of the
