The point of departure
The population of this social housing estate dating from the 1960s had the particularity of being very old (over 70 years old) and isolated.
How could their isolation be brought to an end and the degraded image of the estate, suffering from a 20% vacancy rate, restored?
Action / result
Imagined with the representatives of the inhabitants, the wall design covering 6,000 m² invites the onlooker to discover more than 150 birds painted on the buildings, with links to the neighbouring park, one of the largest in Berlin. The transformation of the facades also called on the artistic spirit of Berlin’s art nouveau period of the 1920s in order to break with the uniformity of the buildings and create a harmonious rhythm.
In two years, this estate has seen its vacancy rate fall to zero, and it has been transformed into a place visited by a large number of schools in the neighbouring area. The living environment has been completely changed for the well-being of the residents, while the presence of children brings back joy and life to the elderly tenants.
This monumental mural design project was awarded the German National Urban Policy Prize 2010.
